Behind The Hooks

Who's That Chick?

Hi I'm Sophie, I live in Dorset, UK and I am the creator, founder and developer of Spinning A Yarn. I make loveable and bespoke crochet items.

Since I was a child I have always been very creative and loved doing arts and crafts, especially making items for my friends and family. I think it's really special to be able to make something yourself and be able to gift it to those you love.

What Am I Passionate About?

For me it’s all about the personal touches. I am definitely a "people person" and can talk all day if I could. I love getting to know my customers; who it is they are buying for, if it is a special occasion, being able to see my handmade items in people’s homes and knowing that my creations have brightened up someone's day. I am always open to chat and getting to know you so please do not hesitate to drop me a message.

I’m also very passionate about protecting the planet, upcycling/recycling where possible and supporting local business. When it comes down to my products and packaging I use little to no plastic where possible. I am always open to suggestions and if you feel I can improve on my carbon footprint, just let me know.

How did I start my crochet journey?

**** Please Note****

This section may be a trigger to some as I speak about depression.

In January 2020 I was working in a hotel and I had a breakdown, I was signed off work, I started therapy and antidepressants. I had suffered badly with side effects from the antidepressants but the main one was that I could not sit still and I constantly had to be doing something with my hands. I started to make pom poms as this didn’t require a lot of attention, it’s very repetitive and your end product is a gorgeous little fluffy ball which I could play with in my hands and was soft to hold.
By March some side effects of the antidepressants started to ease but still I was unable to keep still and I was in need of a project to distract my mind and this is where I started my crochet journey.
I left my job in the March to focus on my mental health as the thought of going back to the hotel was terrifying (and still am to this day), then the first national lockdown had started, which meant I had plenty of time on my hands. I taught myself how to crochet by watching lots of YouTube tutorials and here we are.
